Why I Wrote The Puppet King

Like every author, my least favorite question is: “What is your book about?”

Because I didn’t spend years writing, rewriting, and thinking about it just to reduce it to one sentence. This book was an experience for me. I hope it will be one for you too.

So instead of giving too much away and ruining the surprise, I’ll focus on something else: Why I wrote it.

At the beginning, it wasn’t meant to be a book. It was just an empty Word document and a lot of anger. I wasn’t even sure what I was angry about. Maybe the fact that I was in my early twenties and completely lost. About where I belonged. About who I was. About why everyone else seemed to understand what they were doing, and I didn’t.

The beginning was chaos. A mess of honest thoughts and emotions, written like a letter to the universe.

The universe didn’t answer.

But Alistair did.

My main character was born right there, and he took on the task of searching for answers instead of me.

Who are we?Why are we here?Do we have a predetermined path, or are we just the result of choices we never really had control over?

Of course, in the book, all of this is wrapped in magic, trauma, crowns, titles, and romance.

I didn’t stop writing because I needed answers.

And my character, a deeply irritated, sarcastic prince with a drinking problem, had to go through everything I put in his path… just so we could reach something that feels even a little like the truth.

I suffered with him.I fell, I laughed, I hoped.

Sometimes it didn’t feel like I was writing the story at all… like something else was guiding my hand.

I often say my characters take control and surprise me with what they say and do.

I wrote this book for everyone who feels like an underdog. For those still searching for their place in the world. For those who never stopped hoping. For those who believe that even if we have to fight for our place, with sweat and blood, we still deserve it. And for those who have bigger hearts than they’re willing to admit.

This is for you.
