What I Learned While Preparing My First Novel for Publication: Part 1

Hello, dear readers,

As I like to say: Writing the book was the easiest part.

Not because I didn't spend countless nights pulling my hair out while trying to figure out the story, the world, the characters, rewriting scenes, and wondering why something simply wasn't working.

No, that part was incredibly difficult too. In fact, I think anyone who has finished writing a book is a hero.

But then comes the next stage. The book has to reach people, and that's something I'm still learning how to do.

Honestly, it turned out to be far more complicated than I expected. Suddenly, you realize how many hats you have to wear as an author. Besides being a writer, you also become a marketer, a content creator, someone who thinks about cover design, formatting, ARC campaigns, websites, social media, publishing strategies, character art, and countless other things.

It sounds a little intimidating when I list it all like that, but the truth is that it's also incredibly exciting. Exhausting sometimes? Absolutely. But also highly motivating. Because something very interesting starts to happen.

People begin talking about your book. They become curious about it. They start asking questions.

Lately, I've found myself spending up to two hours a day simply replying to messages. Answering questions, talking about the book, giving advice, and getting to know new people. And before I even realized it, a warm community of people who love stories just as much as I do started forming around me.

That was one of the most pleasant surprises of this entire journey. The realization that publishing a book isn't nearly as lonely as it seems.

From a practical standpoint, I've learned many new skills as well.

I've learned how to create content for social media. How to think about lighting. Which content formats work best. How long should a video be to keep people's attention. How to present my book in a way that's interesting without overwhelming or boring potential readers. And after my long battle with scheduling buttons, I think I've finally figured them out. 😂

Another thing I learned was how to build my own website. How to write blog posts. How to stay consistent with website maintenance and SEO optimization. And before I overwhelm you with all the tasks that come with publishing a novel, I want to say something important:

Every bit of it is worth it.

Because when someone leaves a kind comment, asks when the book is coming out, or tells you they're excited to read it, all those hours suddenly begin to make sense. That's the moment that gives me the energy to keep going.

Perhaps the most important lesson I've learned so far is that consistency is what creates results. You don't have to do something huge every day. Sometimes it's enough to write the acknowledgments. Think about a cover concept. Edit a chapter. Plan a social media post. All of those small steps accumulate over time. And before you realize it, the story that once existed only inside your head begins turning into a real world. A world that is no longer trapped between the pages.

So yes, the road to publication is a long one.

But it's also one of the most fascinating journeys I've ever experienced. This certainly won't be the last time I talk about it.

There are still many things I've learned along the way about content creation, websites, formatting, cover design, ARC campaigns, and so much more.

So let me know in the comments: Which part of the publishing process would you like me to explore in more detail in the next installment?
