What Does a Ghostwriter Actually Do?

“What does a ghostwriter do?” is something people ask me often when they find out what I do for a living.

There are millions of articles on this topic, so instead of repeating the same answers, I’ll explain it the way I see it.

As a ghostwriter, my job is to understand your vision, step into your story, and turn it into a complete book, one that’s ready to move forward to editing.

Over the years, I’ve worked with all kinds of clients.

Some want to be involved in every step of the process. They follow the story closely, ask questions, and constantly bring in new ideas. And honestly, that’s the most natural thing in the world. After all, it’s your story. Your world. Your characters. I’m here to help you bring it to life, and to fully step into it with you, so we can laugh, struggle, and feel everything alongside the characters.

Other clients prefer something much simpler. Sometimes it starts with just a sentence like: “I want a ghost story where the main character defeats spirits.” And that’s it.

I don’t mind that at all. In fact, the more creative freedom I have, the more interesting the challenge becomes. The only difference is that in cases like this, I take on a much bigger role — including creating the full outline of the story. Simply put: the less direction you provide, the more responsibility I take on shaping the story.

But regardless of the type of client, one thing always stays the same.

For me, being a ghostwriter means researching the story, understanding the world, building the characters, and diving deep into why everything happens the way it does.

There’s no real “off” switch. Even after I close my laptop, your story stays with me. I think about what might be missing, how a scene could be stronger, how to express something more clearly, and how to stay true to what you want while also doing what’s best for the story.

So… what does a ghostwriter actually do?

They think. They feel the story with you. They build your world. And long after the work is done, they’re still hoping for your success.

One of my favorite moments is when clients come back to show me their book cover, to talk about the second book, to share that they’ve launched their website, or made their first sale.

That’s when I know the story didn’t just get written. It lived.
