How I Balance Creativity and Discipline as a Writer

Hello, dear readers,

Ever since I started building my social media platforms and website, more and more people have started reaching out to me. Some are readers interested in my upcoming debut novel The Puppet King, while others are writers trying to find their place in the world of storytelling.

And I realized something very quickly, there is a huge amount of gatekeeping surrounding this career. Not only around becoming an author, but also around ghostwriting, which is something I’ve been doing professionally for the past seven years.

That’s exactly why I want my blog to be a place for both readers and writers. Writing is already a difficult career path, and I don’t think we should make it even harder for each other.

Of course, there is endless information available online, but despite that, I’m always open to conversations, questions, and sharing experiences. I’d love to build a community where we support each other instead of constantly competing with one another.

And that brings me to one of the biggest questions in writing:

Do we wait for inspiration… or do we write despite the lack of it? How does writing become something we do every day? And is it really just about discipline?

Honestly, yes and no.

Discipline helps enormously. Every writer will tell you that writing consistently improves your skills, your focus, and your ability to express ideas more clearly and naturally. Over time, it helps transform writing from a hobby into a real career.

But this also creates a very serious problem.

If we write every single day only for productivity, deadlines, or career growth, especially when we completely lack the desire to write, there is a real risk of starting to hate writing itself. And yes, I’m saying this from personal experience.

I could still write a well-structured chapter, deliver the right emotions, and meet deadlines without any issue. But sometimes I was doing it without any joy at all. And I’m not only talking about impostor syndrome or self-doubt — topics I’d also love to discuss someday.

I’m talking about the fact that I had turned writing entirely into work. Into obligation. Especially when you work as a ghostwriter and you are not always writing stories that personally excite you in that moment. And even though I genuinely love my job, I realized that if I wasn’t careful, I could slowly take the magic out of writing for myself.

That’s when I discovered three things that help me balance creativity and discipline.

The first one is taking breaks. Real breaks. Time for nature, walks, movies, music, concerts, friends, or simply moments where your mind is allowed to breathe again.

The second is writing for yourself too. Your own ideas.Your own rules.Your own stories and characters.

That’s exactly how my debut novel The Puppet King was born, the project I’m most proud of and the one I’m most excited to finally share with readers.

And the third, but equally important thing — read.

Read the stories you genuinely love. The ones that inspire you and make you feel something real.

Not only because reading makes you a better writer, but because it reminds you why you started writing in the first place. So my personal rule is simple: Write when you’re not reading. And read when you’re not writing.

And honestly, those three things helped me rediscover the joy of writing, balance discipline with creativity, and create more than I ever thought I was capable of.

Because sometimes the hardest part of being a writer isn’t learning how to write. It’s learning how to keep loving it.
